About Me

My most recent work finds me returning to my first love, drawing. For me, the potential limitations of working with graphite are outweighed by the challenge of creating complexity out of something as basic as a line.

These new drawings represent a shift from my earlier narrative work to images that deal primarily with form and texture. The process of exploring these aspects has not only been liberating, but has allowed me to hone my existing techniques, and as new obstacles arise, new techniques are improvised to deal with them. Different types of line and mark making can yield strikingly different results, and it is always exhilarating to tackle a visual challenge successfully.

There is another challenge in the departure from narrative drawing, and that is maintaining energy in a finished piece that has been obsessively rendered over hundreds of hours. Without a clear narrative, the texture and quality of the line becomes the source of dialog between the viewer and the piece.
